Ohope Scenic Reserve and Moutohora (Whale Island)

Kiwi have been confirmed in plantation forests in Omataroa, Kiwinui, Awakeri, Ohiwa, Taneatua, Kererutahi and Waiotahi.

The Whakatane Kiwi Project initially focused on Ohope Scenic Reserve (500 hectares) with predator-free Moutohora (Whale Island) as a secure back-up kiwi population. Intensive predator control is now carried out in this core area and a surrounding buffer covering approximately 2800 hectares.
