Keep Kiwi Safe
More than 100 kiwi live in local reserves, bush land and forests in the Whakatane region. These kiwi are vulnerable to attack from dogs and cats - both day and night.
Dogs find the strong musky smell of kiwi irresistible and sniff kiwi out and kill them – one bite is all that’s needed and the dogs don’t even eat them. One loose dog could decimate the Whakatane kiwi population.

- Find out if kiwi live in your area and keep your dogs away
- Contact DOC on 0800 362 468, The Project Manager on 07 307 0611 or the Whakatane Kiwi Trust for more information
- Cat owners living near kiwi habitat areas should keep their cat well fed and inside at night.
