Kiwi Releases

Before being released into the bush they are blessed and named by a Ngati Awa Kaumatua and a transmitter is fitted to their leg.

The chicks are closely monitored until juvenile stage and then the females have their transmitters removed and the males continue to be monitored for eventual breeding activity as that’s how it is known that there is an egg to be collected.

Radio tracking is carried out by trained operators usually during the day (once a week initially and later once a month as the bird’s territory and habits are established)
