Bush, biodiversity & telemetry: join the kiwi data monitoring team on a guided tour

Join us for an exclusive guided walk through the Whakatāne and Ōhope Scenic Reserves and help contribute to the daily data collection for our monitored kiwi population

This private tour offers a rare glimpse into daily kiwi conservation efforts—without disturbing the birds—using telemetry to track their behavior and health.

What to Expect: We’ll travel to our scenic reserve areas in our kiwi truck, stopping for guided walks into the bush to gather valuable data from transmitters on monitored kiwi. Along the way, you’ll learn about the Whakatāne Kiwi Project, spot native plants, birds, and insects, and take in stunning coastal scenery.

Tour Details:
•Duration: 2.5 hours, including walking intervals up to 30 minutes; moderate fitness recommended due to a few uphill tracks, steps and hidden tree roots!
•Start time: 9am
•Cost: $200 (limit of 2 people & covers admission for two participants)
•Participants must be 12 or older to attend
•What to bring: Personal medications, water, snacks, bush-walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, long sleeves, rain jacket, camera, binoculars (optional), and a sense of wonder!
•Meeting Point: Mahy Reserve, Pohutukawa Ave, Ohope
•In Case of Rain: Tours will be rescheduled for very wet weather.
Please note: we don’t handle or physically see kiwi on this walk
