Why?

Collaborative Efforts in Protecting Kiwi.

The collaboration between Whakatāne Kiwi Trust, Sam Poots, and Tammy from Mata Beer began with a shared discussion centered around community support and the importance of giving back. Fueled by a mutual passion for community well-being, conservation, and fostering relationships, this partnership was a natural fit from the start.

This partnership resonates deeply with our shared community values, driving our joint efforts to protect kiwi and other indigenous species. Our main goal is to extend awareness beyond the Bay of Plenty region by establishing connections with a wider audience. Through this collaborative outreach, we aim to showcase the notable successes of small towns and emphasise their significant and far-reaching contributions to conservation endeavors.

Together, we are dedicated to creating a more inclusive and cohesive approach to safeguarding our precious wildlife for the benefit of future generations.

About

The Whakatāne Kiwi Trust was set up in 2006 as a charitable trust to promote and protect kiwi in the Whakatāne area.

Whakatāne Kiwi Trust is one of the partners in the Whakatāne Kiwi Project, alongside the Department of Conservation, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, the Whakatāne District Council and Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa.

We aim to promote the protection of kiwi and other indigenous species in the Whakatāne area, through advocacy, education and fundraising.

Mata Beer found its feet back in Kawerau in 2005.

In an old dairy, menswear store and butchers shop, Tammy Viitakangas rolled up her sleeves and dived into her love for craft beer, giving life to something special – Mata Brewery. She managed to convince her Mum Gloria, who became the sales person, and her Dad Jouni, and Uncle Esko to join her on the brewing team.

They launched with 2 different beers, when craft beer was barely a thing and managed to pick up their first medal within 3 months of opening.
